Language is more than a tool for communication – it is a key to understanding the world and connecting cultures. To help students experience the power of authentic communication, LUYA International School has launched the “Beyond the Classroom” International Language Exchange Program, based on the IB framework. This initiative integrates Language and Literature (Group 1) and Language Acquisition (Group 2) to deepen learning through intercultural interaction.

In this program, each LUYA student is paired with a peer from partner schools in the United States and the United Kingdom who are learning Chinese. Together, they engage in one-on-one language exchanges — starting from simple self-introductions and daily life sharing, and progressing to co-reading cultural texts and discussing stories and values from both cultures. Through bilingual conversations in Chinese and English, students develop authentic language skills in a meaningful context.

Through shared reading activities, students not only practice speaking and writing but also learn to listen, understand, and respect different ways of cultural expression. Many participants shared that they not only improved their language ability but also gained a deeper appreciation of their own cultural identity.

“This isn’t just about learning English or Chinese — it’s a cultural journey,” said Ms. Pu, MYP Language Acquisition teacher. “When students talk with peers from other countries, they begin to ask themselves: Who am I? Where do I come from? How does my culture speak to the world?”

Looking ahead, the “Beyond the Classroom” program will continue to grow by partnering with more international schools and introducing new thematic collaborations such as “Cultural Festivals Exchange” and “Bilingual Discussions on Global Issues.” Through these experiences, language truly becomes a bridge for students to explore the world, embrace diversity, and strengthen their sense of identity.
