To celebrate the joyful and meaningful Lantern Festival, our school designed a creative learning activity in the MYP Arts curriculum titled “Red Envelope Lanterns and Lantern Riddles.” Students used recycled red envelopes to create lanterns and designed fun riddles, combining traditional festival culture with artistic creation, language expression, and collaborative learning.

In the activity, students first explored the shapes, colors, and cultural meanings of traditional lanterns. Using red envelopes collected after the Lunar New Year, they applied cutting, folding, and assembling techniques to design unique lanterns. The color red symbolizes celebration and good fortune, allowing students to express both creativity and cultural understanding.

Students also created lantern riddles that included idioms, general knowledge, and school-related topics, encouraging logical thinking and interaction. The finished lanterns and riddles were displayed in public spaces around the campus, inviting teachers and students to participate in a festive riddle-guessing activity.

Through this project, students developed creative expression, cultural awareness, and practical artistic skills, reflecting the inquiry-based learning approach promoted by the International Baccalaureate Organization. The activity allowed students to experience how art can connect culture, creativity, and community.
