IB MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME
Middle Years Programme (MYP)
Starting from questions, students understand knowledge in real contexts, connect subjects, and gradually build independent learning skills.
ABOUT MYP
What is the MYP?
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is the IB’s curriculum framework for students aged 11 to 16; the full framework spans five years. The MYP emphasizes conceptual understanding, interdisciplinary connections, local and global contexts, and inquiry, action, and reflection.
The MYP is not a set of prescribed textbooks but a curriculum and teaching framework: schools design subject units according to IB requirements, helping students connect subject knowledge with daily life, society, and global issues. The grades, subjects, and teaching hours in which LUYA implements the MYP follow the school’s approved curriculum plan.
Authorization
LUYA International High School was authorized to offer the IB MYP on 21 October 2026.
SUBJECT GROUPS
Eight Subject Groups
The MYP framework covers eight subject groups for balanced development. The subjects actually offered and the language of instruction follow the school’s curriculum planning.
Language and Literature
Reading, analysing, and creating different types of texts.
Language Acquisition
Understanding and communicating in another language and its cultures.
Individuals and Societies
Exploring history, geography, economics, and social issues.
Sciences
Building scientific inquiry through observation, experiments, and data.
Mathematics
Understanding mathematical concepts and applying them to solve problems.
Arts
Creating, developing skills, and reflecting through visual or performing arts.
Physical and Health Education
Developing movement skills, healthy habits, and teamwork.
Design
Using the design cycle to analyse needs, develop ideas, create, and evaluate.
HOW STUDENTS LEARN
How Students Learn
ATL SKILLS
Approaches to Learning (ATL)
The MYP focuses on how to learn. Across subjects, students systematically practise five categories of skills:
- Thinking skills
- Research skills
- Communication skills
- Social skills
- Self-management skills
CONCEPTS · CONTEXTS · ACTION
Concepts, Contexts, and Action
Units are built around key concepts and explored in local and global contexts so that students understand how knowledge connects.
Students are also encouraged to turn learning into action, responding to real issues through service and practice, and reflecting on their growth.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment
CRITERIA
Criterion-Related Assessment
MYP assessment measures student performance against IB criteria rather than ranking students against one another. Each subject group has four assessment criteria, each assessed at achievement levels 0–8, which are combined into a final grade from 1 to 7.
Tasks are varied and may include inquiry reports, design work, experiments, oral presentations, and tests. Students understand the requirements in advance and use feedback to improve.
PROJECTS
Community Project and Personal Project
The MYP framework includes a community project and a personal project: students set goals based on their interests, carry out research and practical work, and report on their process and reflection. The personal project is completed in the final year of the MYP.
LUYA’s project arrangements and timelines, and whether students take part in IB external eAssessment, follow the school’s announcements and IB regulations.
PATHWAYS
Pathways
The inquiry, research, communication, and self-management experience gained in the MYP builds a foundation for the academic research, critical thinking, and independent learning required in the DP.
Domestic progression for junior high students in Taiwan (such as the Comprehensive Assessment Program and admission routes) follows the regulations announced by the education authorities each year. Completing the MYP does not guarantee admission to the DP or eligibility for the IB Diploma.
