LUYA International High School continues to promote international language exchange and recently launched a Chinese–English correspondence program with George Westinghouse College Prep in Chicago, USA. During the Christmas season, American students studying Chinese sent handwritten holiday cards across the Pacific. Along with warm greetings, the students introduced themselves in fluent written Chinese, demonstrating impressive language proficiency and leaving a strong impression on LUYA’s teachers and students.
After receiving the cards, LUYA students took the opportunity to respond in an authentic communication context. As the calendar had already turned to a new year, students chose to center their replies on New Year greetings. They designed and wrote their own cards, incorporating traditional Taiwanese festive elements and personal creativity. Some students illustrated spring couplets, lanterns, and auspicious symbols, while others creatively used the imagery of coins symbolizing the phrase “a new beginning brings renewal in all things,” conveying hopes for fresh starts and good fortune.
This exchange went beyond simple letter writing; it became a meaningful cross-cultural dialogue. Through real-world communication, students practiced language skills, gained a deeper understanding of different cultural traditions, and learned how to present local culture in ways that international peers could appreciate. With every handwritten word and drawing, heartfelt messages crossed the ocean, bringing students from different countries closer together.
LUYA International High School noted that it will continue to develop international correspondence, language exchange, and collaborative programs to strengthen students’ language abilities, cultural literacy, and global perspectives—allowing learning to extend beyond the classroom and truly connect with the world.
