In the Grade 10 Pre-DP Visual Arts course at LUYA International High School, students explored the theme of “cross-cultural artistic dialogue.” Beginning with the Indian traditional floor art form Rangoli, they integrated auspicious imagery from the Chinese Lunar New Year into their own creations. Through the use of radial symmetry, geometric and natural motifs, as well as color and light effects, the works convey blessings of peace, happiness, and hope.
Student Lin Hsin-Yun expressed her intention to use star-shaped geometry and radial composition to represent the spreading light of Diwali, symbolizing the transmission of peace and blessings in all directions. Liao Wen-Jun based his work on the idea of welcoming guests, using balanced geometric arrangements to convey a sense of completeness, stability, and harmony. Chen You-Rui combined the formal elements of Rangoli with local cultural symbols, hoping to express blessings for the nation and a sense of cultural identity through color and floral compositions.
Through this cross-cultural art project, students developed an understanding of the symbolic meanings embedded in artistic forms from different cultures and transformed them into visual expressions that reflect their personal perspectives. In the process, they learned techniques of radial symmetry, motif design, and media control, while also cultivating cultural respect, creative thinking, and artistic expression. The project showcases the learning outcomes of the Grade 10 Pre-DP Visual Arts course.
